Environmental enrichment is a set of measures aimed at modifying the living conditions of farm animals in order to enable them to display natural behaviour and reduce the negative impacts of intensive farming systems on their welfare. In the case of pig farming, this term refers mainly to changes in housing, the addition of handling material or the installation of objects that stimulate the animals‘ natural activity and allow them to perform a wider range of behavioural expressions typical of this species. From a practical point of view, environmental enrichment means providing various materials or objects intended for manipulation, nibbling, digging or exploration. These stimuli allow pigs to perform natural behaviour that would normally take place when searching for food or interacting with the environment. At the same time, they provide the animals with the opportunity to engage in activities that are not harmful to other individuals in the group, thereby contributing to the reduction of the incidence of aggression, stereotyped behaviour and other behavioural disorders.
