With increasing environmental pressures and increasing legislative measures, issues of long-term sustainability are being addressed everywhere, including pig farming. Sustainability in this field represents the production of pork in a way that does not burden the environment, respects animal welfare and at the same time ensures the long-term viability of farms. Sustainability in pig farming strives for a balance between production, economy, health and environmental protection. The output should be safe and high-quality food produced in a way that is kind to nature and animals. Inefficient feed use is one of the significant problems of intensive pig production from a sustainability perspective. To reduce losses, precision feeding strategies are being developed that optimize the quantity and quality of feed, thus enabling better use of nutrients and minimizing waste production. These strategies also support animal health and resilience and thus a balance between welfare, environmental responsibility and economic viability.
