Alternatives to permanent crates for farrowing and lactating sows are available on the market but are not yet widely adopted in pig farming. One option is to switch to free farrowing pens without crate structures, as well as outdoor systems. Outdoor systems offer the best conditions for sow and piglet welfare in terms of natural behaviour; however, this type of housing is associated with several potential challenges.
