Abstract

The article addresses heat stress prevention in dairy cows with emphasis on nutritional measures starting in the silage clamp. Heat stress occurs when THI exceeds 68, causing reduced feed intake, milk production and reproductive performance. Aerobic stability of silage plays a key role: overheated silage at the clamp face deteriorates the quality and stability of the entire TMR exactly when cows are most vulnerable. The author recommends selecting silage additives with documented aerobic stability effects (particularly Lentilactobacillus buchneri-based products), adding organic acid TMR stabilisers (4 l/t), feeding at least twice daily during cooler hours, monitoring temperatures in the silage clamp, and adjusting ration composition by increasing energy density and supplementing buffers, potassium, sodium, vitamin E and selenium.
