Despite persistent doubts among hunters, hybridization between red deer and sika deer occurs commonly. Social stability within deer populations does not prevent such hybridization. The resulting hybrids can be identified with near certainty only in the first generation. Subsequent backcrossing with either parental species rapidly restores the external appearance of that species and increases the difficulty of identifying hybrids. At present, no method exists that can reliably detect hybrids.
