The aim of the study was to compare two different types of pair housing of calves in terms of thermal comfort and welfare level. Annual monitoring was carried out in one herd with 8 calves housed in a twin hutches and 16 calves housed in outdoor individual hutches connected by a common run. Temperature and relative air humidity, carbon dioxide concentration were recorded in the calves‘ living zone at hourly intervals by digital data loggers during three macroclimatic periods, i.e. hot summer, mild summer, transitional period. The values obtained were statistically evaluated in the TIBCO Statistica Software. Rearing calves in two hutches connected by a common enclosure with respect to the housing area provides calves with worse welfare conditions in the short term, especially when both calves are lying together in one hutch. Based on the microclimate analysis, it can be stated that calves reared in pair sheds were exposed to higher air humidity and higher carbon dioxide concentrations.
