Description

This project focuses on developing and validating an innovative cow-calf contact (CCC) milking system. This system allows for natural dam-calf bonding for at least 6 months while maintaining milk production for human consumption. Current agricultural practices—even in organic farming—typically involve separating calves from their dams within 24 hours after birth, which inhibits natural maternal behavior and compromises the welfare of for both cows and calves. The project addresses growing societal demand for higher animal welfare standards and responds to EFSA recommendations recognizing CCC systems as welfare-friendly alternatives, bridging the gap between formal organic farming compliance and genuine animal welfare.
The project aims to design and implement a housing and milking technology based on an evaluation of existing international best practices, adapted to the specific conditions of a Czech farm. Key objectives include validating the system’s welfare and production outcomes in practice and developing a comprehensive methodology for implementation by other farmers. The project is a collaborative effort between Biofarma Sasov (an organic farm managing 150 livestock units), the Research Institute of Animal Science, and the PRO-BIO Association of Organic Farmers. Our findings will provide a practical framework for farmers to go beyond standard organic requirements, enabling them to offer consumers high-welfare dairy products that align with the latest European agricultural trends.
